High-Performance Piloted Counterbore for Flush Screw Fits

When demanding machining tasks require socket head cap screws to be recessed flush within components, precise guidance of the countersink tool is essential. The HSS-E Countersink for 180° Capscrew (Medium fit) has been purposely designed for exactly these applications. Its 180° point angle produces a flat counterbore bottom that serves as a solid bearing surface for the screw head. Manufactured from robust high-speed steel with cobalt (HSS-E), this three-fluted tool reliably handles drilling tasks in various steels, stainless steel, and non-ferrous metals. The universal cylindrical shank ensures simple handling, allowing quick tool changes in conventional collets or drill chucks. Whether in mechanical engineering, toolmaking, or general manufacturing, this flat counterbore provides a well-thought-out solution for professional use.

Applications

This cutting tool was developed to produce flat-bottomed recesses primarily required for socket head cap screws and set screws. The integrated pilot is matched to pre-drilled through holes of "Medium" clearance, making the counterbore an excellent choice for the most common screw connections. It can be utilized flexibly on both conventional pedestal drills and modern CNC machining centers.

The inherent toughness of the HSS-E tool material opens up a wide range of applications. The piloted countersink is well-suited for structural steels, case-hardening steels, tempered steels, and tooling steels. Furthermore, it supports the productive machining of stainless steel with a tensile strength of up to 1100 N/mm². It also achieves convincing results in non-ferrous metals such as aluminum alloys (under 12% silicon content) as well as in copper and brass materials.

Special features

The interplay of three geometrically optimized flutes and the fixed pilot represents the core feature of this tool. While the pilot effectively prevents the drill from deflecting and enables high concentricity of the counterbore relative to the core hole, the three flutes guarantee smooth chip evacuation. This noticeably reduces the risk of chatter marks, resulting in an improved surface quality in the area of the screw bearing surface.
